The 2016 Olympic Games ended with a spectacular closing ceremony on Sunday, as Tokyo were also handed hosting duties for the 2020 edition.
Despite the poor weather conditions, fans filled the Maracana Stadium to watch the carnival-inspired event.
This year’s Olympics featured 11,303 athletes from 206 countries and a refugee team.
“These were a marvellous Olympics, in a marvellous city,” International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said.
“Over the last 16 days a united Brazil inspired the world, in difficult times for all of us, with its irresistible joy for life.”
Team Nigeria ended the entire competition with a bronze medal, which was won in the men’s football competition by the Dream Team VI.
The USA finished top of the medals table with 121 medals (46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze), while Great Britain came second with 67 medals (27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze).
