Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s news summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The death has been announced of reggae music icon, Ukeleke Onwubuya, otherwise known as Ras Kimono. The singer died Sunday morning in Lagos after complaining of ‘not feeling fine’ the previous night.

2. Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has claimed that there is an alleged plan by the Buhari-led government to arrest and detain former president Olusegun Obasanjo. He also said the government has marked vocal critics as well as opposition leaders for similar treatment.

3. Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Sunday evening kidnapped a Methodist Presbyter in Osun State, Very Rev. Kayode Akande, and two other church leaders along the Iwo-Osogbo Road.

Bankole, who is an engineer and one of the leaders of the church, Mr, Omodunbi, were forcefully taken away by the suspected Fulani herdsmen around 7pm.

4. Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has called out Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, over N4.6 billion contract allegedly awarded without execution.

The party explained that the said sum was meant to construct four trailer parks in different locations across the state.

5. Adamawa State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr Ahmad Sajoh, has confirmed the death of a boy with two others injured following an explosion in Mubi town.

Sajoh said the explosion suspected to be from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) occurred at a scrap materials gathering point along kabang area of the town.

6. The State High Court, sitting in Ede, Osun, has put behind bars, Alfred Aderibigbe, the nurse who treated Senator Isiaka Adeleke before his death.

Nurse Aderibigbe was indicted by the coroner’s inquest led by Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, for allegedly administering an overdose on the late Senator Adeleke.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday arrived in Morocco, on a two-day working visit to the country.

According to a statement on Saturday by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, the visit, which is at the invitation of His Royal Majesty, King Mohammed VI, will see the two leaders discuss socio-economic matters affecting their countries.

8. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has declared wanted 59 persons alleged to be ring leaders and sponsors of insecurity within Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said the suspects were needed to explain their roles in the resurgence of and persistent crises in the two affected areas during which four church leaders and one official of the Independent National Electoral Commission were kidnapped for ransom last week at Uruk Ata 2 community.

9. The Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday said it has arrested 12 suspected members of rival cult groups terrorising Apo area of Abuja and its environs.

The suspects are: Nonso Nnaji, Chukwuebuka Okoye, Sunday Ogbodo, Peter Chinedu, Jude Ezeh, Agha Henry, Ndubisi John, Johnson Victor, Ikenna Ejike a.ka. Gorilla, Fredric Emeje, Michael Omaliko and Emeka Joseph.

10. A bomb buried by suspected Boko Haram terrorists at a dump site has exploded, killing one person and injuring two others.

It was learnt that the explosion occurred some minutes after 2pm on Sunday as some boys scavenging at the dump site dug out the unsuspecting bomb which subsequently exploded with them.
