Taliban launch fresh attacks on Western Afghanistan city

Unread postby Wsj » Thu May 17, 2018 1:51 pm

Hundreds of Taliban fighters again attacked parts of the provincial capital of Farah in Western Afghanistan, officials said on Thursday.

This is coming two days after Afghan forces repelled militants from the area.

On Tuesday, following fighting in Farah that lasted for over 22 hours, security forces beat back one of the largest Taliban attacks since the end of the NATO combat mission in 2014.

In a rare feat for the Taliban, militants were able to storm parts of the provincial capital, also called Farah.

It was the first time such an incident in the capital city occurred since the fall of the northern city of Kunduz in 2015.

“On Thursday, the main focus of the new attacks were the Farah Police headquarters, the provincial prison, two police stations and the home of the Head of the Provincial Council,’’ local council member, Abdul Samad Salihi, told newsmen.

A UN office was also targeted but a UN spokesman did not want to comment on damages or potential victims.

Local sources estimated the number of attackers between 1,000 and 1,500.

“The attacks started at around 11.00 p.m. (1930 GMT) and raged on until Thursday morning.

“Afghan forces fought back with airstrikes,’’ Salihi said.

According to the sources, there were no casualties among security forces and no initial information about casualties on the side of the Taliban.

Farah province shares a border with Iran and also sits next to Helmand, Afghanistan’s largest opium-producing province.

This makes it a key territory for smuggling drugs, the main source of income for the Taliban.
