A renowned Political Scientist, Professor Osisioma Nwolise has declared that failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference amounts to insulting the collective intelligence of Nigerians.
Nwolise, who currently heads the Department of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, stated this in his lecture at the 2018 Samuel Ladoke Akintola Memorial Lecture held at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan, on Thursday.
The don insisted that solutions to the series of problems militating against Nigeria lied in the implementation of some of the recommendations of the conference.
Nwolise who spoke on the lecture titled, “Akintola and Self Government”, described the late Premier of the defunct Western Region as a patriotic Nigerian, who used his knowledge and political offices to fight to Nigeria’s independence through a motion he moved on March 26, 1957.
The don lamented that it was unfortunate that since independence, Nigerians had not seen the promises and dividend of sacking the whitemen.
“Since 1960, Nigerians have not seen the promises and dividends of independence, apart from the sacking of the whitemen from political power,” he said.
While noting that some of the recommendations of the conference addressed problems of corruption and injustice in the country, Nwolise said it will not be in the best interest of Nigerians for the Buhari-led APC government to throw away all the recommendations.
He identified the body language of the APC led federal government that seemingly encourages injustice as the factor responsible for the increasing rate of insecurity in the country.
According to him, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Niger-Delta Avengers emerged as response to perceived injustice, stressing “in circumstances like this, justice is sweater than peace”.
