Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo yesterday signed into law the 2017 Appropriation Act into in the presence of the leadership of the National Assembly and other top government officials at the presidential Villa. The budget whose projected fiscal deficit would be chiefly financed by borrowing has revenue projection of N5.08tn and an aggregate expenditure of N7.44tn.

2. Following the raid of the head office of The Sun Newspaper in Lagos by the EFCC, the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), has given the Commission 72 hours to issue an apology to the newspaper or face a lawsuit. Chairman of the Lagos NUJ, Deji Elumoye, described the sealing off of the newspaper house as “barbaric.”

3. Popular lawyer and activist, Femi Falana , SAN, on Monday alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was merely denying its electoral promises of restructuring the country, stating that the promise was on first page of its manifestoes ahead of the 2015 election. Falana spoke at the June 12 event organized by the APC led-government in Ondo State.

4. The National Hospital, Abuja, has revealed the cause of the death of a 200-level student of the Mass Communication Department of the Cross River State University of Science and Technology, CRUTEC, Joy Odama who was allegedly killed by one Alhaji Usman Adamu. The hospital said Odama died of acute cocaine poison.

5. Wife of comedian, Ayo Makun, Mabel, has warned the CEO of Oasis Med Spa, Freda Francis, to leave her husband and her family alone. In an Instagram post, she alleged that her husband and Freda were seeing themselves and shared an intimate chat between the duo. She has since deleted the chat.

6. The Naira has continued to wax stronger against the United States dollar , closing 364 against the dollar at the parallel market on Monday. The local currency had closed at 365 per dollar on Sunday.

7. No fewer than two persons were allegedly killed in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital on Monday following a clash between Governor Yahaya Bello and Dino Melaye’s supporters. Report says several others were injured. One of those killed was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic.

8. Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has approved a new board for the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Assistant Director (Press), in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mohammed T.K Nakorji. Dr. Muhammad Isah from Jigawa state (North West) has been named the new board‎ Chairman.

9. There was protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Monday as civil servants in the ministry kicked against alleged poor welfare condition. The protest which began at about 11am on the first floor of the ministry, saw the workers demanding the removal of the Director of Finance and Account, Mr. Sanni Garba, for allegedly refusing to approve their welfare packages.

10. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has commenced investigation into the budget padding allegation levelled against the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and other principal members of the House. The anti-graft agency, made the disclosure in a letter inviting Abdulmumin Jibrin to shed more light on his budget padding allegation against the Speaker and other principal members of the House.
