Unread postby Wsj » Wed Feb 01, 2017 7:28 am

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Suspended Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, on Tuesday said she did not misappropriate N15 million as alleged by some of her colleagues. Akindele, in a statement said she was a signatory to the House schedule, but not a signatory to the cheques. She said the Pay Master was the lawful custodian of all unspent funds of the House and was only acting in his official capacity as such.

2. Report says fuel price may go up by N5 if the House of Reps signs the current National Roads Fund Bill into law. A technical committee set up by the House Committee on Works, headed by Toby Okechukwu, made the recommendation, suggesting that there should be fuel levy of N5 chargeable per litre on any volume of petrol and diesel products imported into Nigeria and on locally refined petroleum products.

3. Report says the Department of State Services and the General Overseer, Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, are not to grant interviews regarding the outcome of their meeting. The issue has, however, been resolved even as the Apostle was cautioned to watch what he says so it is not misinterpreted by his followers.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has extended an invitation to the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Bamitale Omole, in order to respond to allegations of fraud and other financial crimes brought against him. This follows a petition by a group known as the Third Eye Transparency International, Obafemi Awolowo University chapter.

5. Report says an estimated N1 trillion was spent by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, political parties and candidates for the 2015 elections, This was revealed, yesterday during a two-day Learning Conference on the Regional Cost of Politics.

6. The Federal Government, yesterday in Abuja, said some sensitive documents and highly important to the Boko Haram sect had been recovered from the Sambisa Forest. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who disclosed this, said the items, including the propaganda strategy of the sect was recovered after the terrorists abandoned the forest as a result of military raid and consequent takeover.

7. The Federal Road Safety Corps has recommended a nationwide ban on commercial motorcycles popularly known as ‘Okada’ to reduce road accidents.
The recommendation forms part of the October Road Traffic Crash Report 2016, submitted by the Corps Marshal, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Oyeyemi said motorcyclist remained a major cause of fatal road traffic accidents across the country, hence the need for state governments to consider banning them.

8. The Federal High Court, sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on Tuesday trashed an Appeal filed before it by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on the judgement delivered on December 13, 2016 ordering the agency to defreeze Fayose’s bank accounts. Justice Taiwo of the Ekiti Federal High Court while dismissing the EFCC’s appeal on Tuesday, said the motion was made in bad faith

9. The presidency has responded to the planned protest by 2face Idibia and others against the current government , saying those behind the protest are still express their pain over the outcome of the 2015 presidential election. Reacting, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has described the planned protest as mere jealousy.

10. Deputy Director of Buhari Support Organization, BHS, Blessing Agbomhere, has alleged that the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was behind the arrest of the founder of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleman.
Agbomhere in a video posted on youtube stated that El-Rufai and the director of the DSS, Mr. Lawan Daura, were both Fulanis, hence they agreed to shut out strong voices rising against herdsmen attacks.
