Implement 2014 Confab report before 2019 election – Afenifere‎ tells Buhari

Unread postby Wsj » Tue Jan 31, 2017 9:53 pm

The Pan Yoruba social Cultural-Group, ‎Afenifere on Tuesday said it will ensure that the recommendation of the 2014 national conference is implemented before 2019 general elections.

Also, the Yoruba group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately send the name of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation.

These resolutions were taken at this year’s first meeting of Afenifere and which was held at the residence of its leader, PA. Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The event which was tagged as “family reunion” was attended by old members and some new faces like Chief Bode George, Gbenga Kaka, Olu Falae, Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, Omololu Meroyi, Tokunbo Ajasin, Ayo Adebanjo, Supo Sanibare and Cornelius Adebayo

Others were, Janet Febisola, Iyiola Omisore, Prof. Banji Akintoye, Bakkita Bello, Dayo Adeyeye, Akin Onigbinde, Paul Oguntimehin, Chief Sola Ebiseni among others.

At the middle of the meeting, the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko arrived the venue with his entourage.

A communique read to reporters shortly after the meeting by Afenifere spokesman, ‎Mr. Yinka Odumakin reads “the meeting was elated that Yorubas have closed ranks has witnessed in ‎the historical gathering which present a new begining for Yoruba nation.

“This is a time when all its nobles must put aside partisan differences and put together to remake Yoruba land and redirect the affairs of Nigeria, the way the Yoruba did in the years before independence when we work with our friends across Nigeria to negotiate a federal constitution upon which we gained our independence.

“Meeting observed that the state of Nigeria moment is very frightening and warring with uncertainty looming in the air.

“We are worried by the mass killing going on in the southern kaduna in Oke-Ogun and other part of the country. The states appear to be helpless or sometimes unwilling to curb the excess of these killers as evidence in a governor announcing to the whole country that he paid those who killed our citizens ‎and up till date, he has not been asked any question of channel.

“Meeting is worried that we have refused to run Nigeria as multi-ethnic state along federal lines.

“In 1967, in his book, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo warned this country that any attempt to run Nigeria on unity constitution, will be productive of disunity, of fighting and that the administrative machinery of governance would come under a halt

“To this end, meeting resolved to set up a high power committee to rouse Yoruba nation and to network with our friends and likeminds across Nigeria to resist that this country must be restructured before we go for another election in this country.

“We must get all hands on desk for the implementation of the recommendation of 2014 of national conference and which was submitted to the Federal Executives Council in the same 2014.

“Afenifere was worried that almost few days to the expiration of the tenure of the CJN, Onnoghen in the acting capacity, the president has refused to forward the recommendation of Nigeria Judiciary Council (NJC) to the National Assembly for Confirmation.

“We see this as an assault on the constitution and an attempt to truly end the career of a worthly Nigerian

“Therefore, we called on Mr. President to within the few days left for the expiration of the acting tenure of justice Onnoghen send his name to senate for confirmation”
