Fayose’s Aide Trial: I Don’t Know Owner, Source of N1.129bn Paid into My Account – Witness

Unread postby Wsj » Thu Jan 26, 2017 8:32 pm

The first prosecution witness, Sunday Alade, in the trial of Abiodun Agbele, an aide to the Ekiti Sate Governor, Ayodele Fayose, Thursday, stunned the court when he said he didn’t know the owner or source of N1.129bn paid into his account by the first defendant.
Agbele along with Sylvan Mcnamara Ltd, De Privateer Ltd and Spotless Investment Ltd are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged laundering of N4.6bn for Fayose.
The witness, a staff of Zenith Bank, while answering question from the defence counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court Abuja, held that he never had any interaction with the first defendant, thus unawares of the source and ownership of the money paid into his personal account.
The witness, who claimed to have been incorporated into a transition committee of Governor Ayodele Fayose two months after the alleged sum was conveyed into his Zenith Bank account, also told the court that he did not ask questions of his sudden appointment into the transition Committee since he acted on the directive of his Zonal Head of the bank.
In a cross examination, he told the court that the first defendant had in no time disclosed the ownership of the purported N1.129bn which was transferred into a bullion van from two different aircrafts on June 2014.
Alade however stated that he, alongside the first defendant patiently waited for the arrival of the aircrafts at the tarmac, stressing that Agbele did not arrive with any of the aircrafts.
Responding to a question from the defence counsel, Alade maintained that the two aircrafts that brought the money differ in terms of size.
According to him, the first to land appeared to have differed from the second aircraft, saying the second one was smaller than the first even though he was unable to identify the owner of the aircrafts vis-a-vis the registration number.
He however pointed out that one of the persons who came down from the heavily guarded aircraft discussed briefly with the first defendant before taking his leave and thus did not instruct Agbele to deposit the money to anyone one’s account; neither did he accompany the defendant in the bullion van to the bank.
The defence counsel prayed the court for a long adjournment due to his step mother’s burial holding in Benin City.
The trial Judge, Justice Nnamdi however adjourned till the 27th and 28th of March 2017, for continuation of trial.
